Understanding Seasonal Coverage: When to Adjust Your RV Insurance

Whether you’re a full-time RV traveler or use your recreational vehicle (RV) for weekend getaways, protecting your investment with the right insurance coverage is essential.

Recreational vehicle insurance can provide financial protection for various types of recreational vehicles, including motorhomes, campers, travel trailers and fifth wheels. Depending on the time of year and your usage, you may encounter circumstances where you’ll want to adjust your RV insurance.

Seasonal RV Insurance Considerations

Even if you do not use your RV year-round due to weather conditions or other personal situations, you will still want to maintain cover. However, examining your specific circumstances will help you decide if it is better to maintain full coverage or if storage-only insurance would be more suitable.

Storage-only RV insurance can financially help cover incidents that may happen while your vehicle is in storage. Even if your RV is kept on your property, potential incidents, such as vandalism, theft or certain weather-related damages, can still occur.

It’s important to note that storage-only insurance typically does not include collision coverage, which means it may not cover the incident if your RV is in storage and another vehicle collides with it. If you plan on storing your RV in a location where it could be hit by another vehicle, you may want to retain full coverage even when your RV is in storage.

Insurance for RVs Used as Primary Residences

If you have been using your RV for short trips but then decide to use it as your primary residence, you will probably need to update your insurance policy to reflect this change in usage. Your insurance provider should be able to offer full-time RV insurance. Full-time RV insurance coverage is similar to a homeowners policy because the vehicle is your home. It is essential to update your insurance if your circumstances change; an insurer may deny a claim if you use your RV as a permanent residence without full-time RV insurance.
